Apakah yang terjadi jika ada amnesia kronis melanda manusia? Semua kebaikan akan terhapus tanpa cerita. Bahkan kenangan akan kehilangan dayanya di hadapan kekuasaan peristiwa hidup yang terus berlanjut. Atau, yang lebih lebih celaka, orang tidak bisa belajar dari sejarah. Kesadaran akan kebaikan masa lalu menyebabkan muncul kerinduan untuk menulis sejarah. Sebuah upaya mencatat kembali apa yang terjadi di waktu lampau.

Jika menilik usul asal kata, dalam bahasa Inggris, sejarah disebut “history” yang secara etimologis berasal dari kata bahasa Yunani “historia” yang berarti ikuiri (inquiry), wawancara (interview), interogasi saksi mata dan laporan mengenai hasil tindakan; entah saksi (witness) maupun hakim (judge), seorang yang tahu tentang peristiwa. Sejarawan ternama, Tacitus (69-96) menggunakan sebutan yang sama untuk judul bukunya yang sohor, Historiae untuk peristiwa-peristiwa yang diamatinya dan Annales untuk laporan periode sebelumnya. Istilah annal (Latin: Annalecta) dan kemudian chronicles menjadi sebutan yang kerap. Konon, Gereja zaman lampau memiliki tradisi mencatat (annals dan chronicles) yang sangat bagus sehingga membentuk sebuah historiae yang komplit dan terpercaya.

Berbeda dengan tardisi Barat yang mengandalkan tulisan dan keberaksaraan sebagai pengingat, tradisi Timur malah menciptakan model reminder yang lain, yakni ritual-ritual. Salah satunya yang layak untuk dibahas adalah ritual akhir tahun orang Manggarai.

Menjelajahi wilayah Manggarai Raya hari ini, di 31 Desember setiap tahun, ada nuansa eksotis dalam serpihan ritual teing hang empo (harafiah: memberi makan leluhur) yakni sebuah upacara khusus yang dilakukan untuk mengucap syukur kepada Sang Pencipta dan leluhur, memohon ampun atas segala kesalahan sekaligus memohon pertolongan agar kehidupan yang akan datang lebih baik.

Di awal abad ke-20, pekabar Injil yang memasuki wilayah ini melihat ritual ini sebagai bagian dari penyembahan berhala. Bahkan keragu-raguan itu juga masih muncul pada para gembala umat di abad ke-21 ini, lebih-lebih saat mereka menanggapi bagian toto urat (memperlihatkan pratanda yang ditunjukkan hati dan usus hewan korban) sebagai bentuk takhyul.

Menyaksikan kekhusukan acara dan sikap bathin pelaku yang meyakini upacara teing hang empo sebagai bagian esensial dari ritual tahunan jelang tutup tahun melahirkan pertanyaan: mengapa orang Manggarai masih terikat pada tradisi semacam itu?

Penghormatan terhadap leluhur menjadi sangat terkenal dalam wacana para ahli agama setelah filsuf dan sosiolog Inggris menulis buku Principles of Sociology (London, Vol I 1876). Terdapat Sembilan belas bab dari buku ini membahas tentang hidup manusia, kematian, kebangkitan, jiwa, roh, kehidupan sesudah kematian dan kultus penyembahan dan penghormatan kepada roh. Bab 20 berjudul The Veneration of Ancestor in General (penghormatan kepada leluhur secara umum) membahas secara serius tentang mengapa perlu menghormati para leluhur. Dalam bagian ini Spencer mengatakan bahwa terbanyak masyarakat yang memiliki ritual semacam ini percaya bahwa leluhur adalah pengantara.

Usaha Melawan Lupa

Membahas kembali ritual teing hang empo pada pesta penti maupun acara tutup tahun di Manggarai ada kenyataan tak terbantahkan tentang keterjalinan sejarah hidup manusia. Adanya manusia kini disebabkan adanya manusia terdahulu. Keberadaan menjadi nyata oleh keberadaan itu sendiri. Sesuatu tidak mungkin ada dari kenihilan (creatio ex nihilo). Empo (leluhur), ende agu ema (mama dan bapak) adalah pencipta yang berkesinambungan.

Ritual teing hang empo pada galibnya adalah sebuah mimesis akan mengalirnya waktu dan peristiwa-peristiwa. Kebersamaan dalam situasi yang bahagia, kisah tentang keberhasilan dan kesuksesan bahkan kegagalan yang lalu memberi pesan kuat untuk lebih berusaha adalah tirisan refleksi pengikat memori.

Ada benang merah yang tak dapat disangkal pada persambungan kehidupan manusia yang akrab disebut regenerasi. Alih generasi ini muncul dalam wajah yang jamak: nilai-nilai (persaudaraan, semangat kekeluargaan, persatuan, kebersamaan, kasih, saling memaafkan), pengalaman, pengetahuan, dan keyakinan. Di sini ritual teing hang ingin menegaskan bahwa eksistensi kita sebagai manusia tak pernah seutuhnya menjadi milik kita. Eksistensi itu terus mengalir pada nadi pribadi dan waktu yang terus berputar menghasilkan kisahan-kisahan baru (new story telling).

Leluhur (empo) ataupun mama dan bapa (ende-ema) yang telah mangkat mengingatkan kita, agar tidak lupa, bahwa hidup tak pernah final. Kebaikan tak pernah sempurna. Ia menjadi katarsis yang selalu menggema di sepanjang kehidupan pada saat memoria kita tetap bersujud di hadapan kerapuhan waktu. Waktu yang usang karena dibatasi nama (hari, minggu, bulan dan tahun) senantiasa diperbarui oleh kenangan akan kebaikan kehidupan para pendahulu. Serentak keyakinan bahwa mereka tetap menjunjung kita dalam doa yang tak kunjung putus di hadapan Sang Khalik, Pemilik Kehidupan itu.
